Tom Keneally Crimes of the Father
Excommunicated to Canada due to his radical preaching, Father Frank Docherty is now a psychologist and monk. He returns to Australia to speak on abuse in the Church, and unwittingly is soon listening to stories from two different people – a young man, via his suicide note, and an ex-nun. Both claim to have been sexually abused by an eminent Sydney cardinal. This senior churchman is currently facing a commission investigating sex abuse within the Church. The novel is an exploration of faith as well as an examination of marriage, of conscience and celibacy, and the Catholic Church itself.

Peter Greste The First Casualty: A memoir from the front lines of the global war on journalism
Peter Greste spent two decades reporting from the front line in the world’s most dangerous countries before making headlines himself following his incarceration in an Egyptian prison. Charged with threatening national security, then enduring a sham trial, solitary confinement and detention for 400 days, Greste became a victim of the new global war on journalism. Greste shows how this war has spread to the West, not just in the murders at Charlie Hebdo or the repressions of Putin’s Russia, but also in Australia’s metadata laws and Trump’s phony war on ‘fake news’.

Lesley Truffle The Scandalous Life of Sasha Torte
In the winter of 1912 on the wild west coast of Tasmania, Wolfftown’s most notorious heiress and murderess, Sasha Torte, tells the tale of her own spectacular downfall. Forsaken by her parents and raised by criminals and reprobates, Sasha becomes a world-famous pastry chef at the tender age of 17. Entanglement with the disreputable Dasher brothers leads to love, but also to a dangerous addiction. Behind bars in Wolfftown’s gaol, Sasha sips premium champagne as she recalls a life of seduction, betrayal, ghosts, opium and an indiscreet quantity of confectionary – and plots her escape.

Tim Causer (ed) Memorandoms by James Martin: An astonishing escape from early New South Wales
This is the only extant first-hand account of the most well-known escape from Australia by transported convicts. On the night of 28 March 1791, James Martin, William and Mary Bryant, their two infant children and six other male convicts stole the colony’s fishing boat and sailed out of Sydney Harbour. Within ten weeks they had reached Kupang in West Timor, having travelled over 5000 kilometres in an open boat. There they passed themselves off as the survivors of a shipwreck. This new edition of
Memorandoms includes full colour reproductions of the original manuscripts, alongside a transcript with commentary describing the events and key characters.
