Jesse Blackadder Sixty Seconds

You can never go back – but can you forgive? The Brennans –parents, Finn and Bridget, and their sons, Jarrah and Toby – have made a sea change, from chilly Hobart to subtropical Murwillumbah. Feeling like foreigners in this land of sun and surf, they’re still adjusting to work, school, and life in a sprawling purple weatherboard, when one morning, tragedy strikes. In the devastating aftermath, the questions fly. What really happened? And who’s to blame? ‘Sixty Seconds gives a powerful insight into how ordinary people cope with extraordinary events.’ – Sally Nimon, NRB.

Ashleigh Young Can You Tolerate This?

Can You Tolerate This? is a collection of 21 personal essays that tell the story of a young woman growing up in a small New Zealand town and making her way as an adult into the wider world. Young roams freely from preoccupation to preoccupation: the music scenes in regional New Zealand, family relations, eccentric characters, the desire for physical transformation – trying to find some measure of clarity amid uncertainty. ‘Young [makes] the personal essay a work of resonant literary art.’ – Mark Williams, Australian Book Review.

Gabriella Coslovich Whiteley on Trial

It was a cause célèbre – the biggest case of alleged art fraud to come before the Australian criminal justice system, a $4.5 million sting drawing in one of the country’s most gifted and ultimately tragic artists, Brett Whiteley, a heroin addict who died alone in 1992. A jury finds two men guilty of faking Whiteleys, but a year later the appeal bench sensationally acquits them. The paintings are returned to their owners, leaving the legitimacy of the artworks in limbo.

Meg and Tom Keneally The Soldier’s Curse

In the Port Macquarie penal settlement for second offenders, at the edge of the known world, gentleman convict Hugh Monsarrat hungers for freedom. When the Commandant’s wife is poisoned and Monsarrat’s best friend is arrested. Monsarrat knows he must find the real killer. ‘… the real joy of the novel is its protagonist.’ – Chris Maher, NRB.
