Peter FitzSimons The Legend of Albert Jacka
Albert Jacka was the first Australian soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross in World War I. From a dairy farm in Victoria, Jacka enlisted at the age of 21 in 1914 and landed at Gallipoli on 26 April 1915. There he single-handedly held off a Turkish attack as his comrades lay dead or dying around him. He went on to serve in France, only returning home after suffering a sniper’s bullet and then a gas attack at Villers-Bretonneux.
